Fight Day 5K - Catterall v Barboza Jr: Philips Park, Manchester

The latest instalment of the Fight Day 5K series saw the Matchroom team join forces with England Athletics and their RunTogether programme for the first time, as fans flocked to the Co-op Live in Manchester this morning – in the build-up towards a huge night of boxing, as Jack Catterall squares off against Arnold Barboza Jr at the city’s state-of-the-art new venue.

With over 150 people in attendance, it was another huge turnout – with Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn and Frank Smith orchestrating proceedings alongside our good friends Manchester Road Runners and Run the Streets MCR.

Once everyone was checked in and registered, Matchroom’s Head of Fitness & Wellbeing, Kai Peacock, led a dynamic warm-up inside Vertu Place, before participants readied themselves with a short walk across to Philips Park for the start.

As the run got underway, with the tunes blaring courtesy of Run the Streets MCR – groups of all different paces took in three laps of the leafy, but very hilly Philips Park. The route certainly tested endurance and determination, but the camaraderie and energy of the runners made for an electric atmosphere throughout.

Commonwealth Middleweight Champion, Kieron Conway – making his second appearance in Manchester this week – was joined by rising stars Leo Atang, Adam Maca and Tiah Ayton as they engaged with the public while tackling the challenging, yet rewarding course.

Joining the boxers and local running community were a host of amateur boxing clubs, including Moss Side Fire Station ABC, Walkden ABC and Nxt Gen ABC Oldham, amongst others.

RunTogether

England Athletics’ RunTogether programme is designed to make running more accessible, social and enjoyable for people of all abilities. It provides a structured framework for local running groups, led by trained Run Leaders, to support beginners and experienced runners alike. The initiative aims to break down barriers to participation by fostering a welcoming, non-competitive environment where people can run for fitness, mental well-being and community connection.

RunTogether groups are free or low-cost and offer a range of sessions, from walk-to-run programmes for beginners to more structured runs for those looking to improve. The platform also includes an easy-to-use website and app, allowing runners to find and join local groups based on their location, experience level and goals. By promoting inclusivity and a strong support network, RunTogether plays a key role in getting more people active across England.

RunTogether in numbers

  • 230,527 – Active Runners
  • 457,942 – Total Sessions
  • 647,600 – Total Bookings
  • 3,421 – RunTogether Groups

Thanks to Everlast, every participant proudly sported brand-new community t-shirts, hydration was well taken care of by Drip, ensuring everyone stayed refreshed throughout the morning – and, for the first time, FuelHub were on hand to provider runners with a selection of nutritious snacks and treats pre and post-run.

After crossing the finish line, participants returned to Vertu Place, where the festivities continued. Many took on the FuelHub pull-up challenge, with two lucky winners earning a month’s supply of free meals for completing as many pull-ups as possible in thirty seconds.

The event served as an ideal opportunity for fans to stay active, show their support, and be part of a historic night for British boxing. Whether first-time runners or experienced athletes, participants of all fitness levels came together, contributing to a lively and inclusive atmosphere that celebrated both sport and community.
